Cuba has a unique musical and cultural foundation. With it's blend
of African and European culture, music is a fusion of the rythmic
concepts of Africa and the harmonic concepts of Europe.
Ethnomusicology is the study of music in its cultural context and
inside these pages you will discover the world of Cuban music and
instruments. Unlike the usual information you may find elsewhere, these
pages will emphasize both the cultural and practical. Many myths and
misinformation will be discussed as well as examples and practical
usage of Cuban musical instruments, Cuban musical styles and Cuban
cultural issues that affect Cuban Music.

Los tambores batá son los instrumentos sagrados de la Santería cubana. Son tres tambores con forma de reloj de arena, de diferentes tamaños y funciones musicales. Su principal función religiosa es la de establecer una vía de comunicación entre los creyentes de la Santería y los dioses u orishas a quienes veneran. Los tambores batá originales son africanos y están vinculados al culto a los Orishas profesado por los yoruba, que habitan aún hoy en el actual territorio de Nigeria. Estos tambores también se utilizan en la música del Candomblé en Brasil. Sin embargo, aquí nos referiremos solo a su tipología cubana.
